Past, present, future, and why the middle card carries most
beginner3

The three-card timeline, plus two better position sets for the same layout when the timeline reading goes flat.
Three cards left to right, read as what came before, where things stand, and where they are tending. It is the first spread nearly everyone learns and the one most likely to produce a dull reading, because the past and future positions invite you to tell a story rather than look at what is in front of you.
The centre card is where the reading lives. It describes the present, which is the only part of the situation you can act on, and the two flanking cards are best read as pressure on it: one from behind, one ahead. Try reading the middle card entirely on its own first, write a sentence about it, and only then look left and right. Readings done this way come out noticeably sharper than ones read in sequence.
The future position needs a careful frame. Read it as a tendency in the current pattern rather than an event, and say so out loud if you are reading for somebody else. A Five of Pentacles in position three means the situation is trending toward scarcity or exclusion as things currently run, which is a thing to think about. It is not a forecast, and treating it as one is how three-card readings turn into anxiety.
When the timeline reading goes flat, the same three cards take other position sets. The first alternative: situation, my part in it, what I am not seeing. That one converts almost any stalled question into something workable and is worth knowing by heart. The second: what to keep, what to change, what to leave alone, which suits questions about habits and routines.
A third variant works well for questions involving another person. Card one for what you are bringing, card two for what they are bringing, card three for what is between you. It is the most useful three-card set for relationship questions because neither of the first two positions asks the cards what someone else secretly thinks, which is a question tarot is not equipped for and which produces readings people then act on badly.
Whichever set you use, name the positions before you shuffle and write them in the notebook next to the cards. Deciding what position two meant after seeing the card there is the single easiest way to fool yourself, and with only three cards on the table it is very easy to do.
