A twelve-card year reading, read as themes rather than months

Twelve cards for the year ahead, laid in a circle and read in groups of three, with the reasons not to assign them to months.

Twelve cards laid clockwise in a circle, drawn at the start of a year or on a birthday, read in four groups of three rather than one card per month. The month-by-month version is the popular one and it tends to age badly, because a card assigned to August becomes something you watch for instead of something you think with. Grouping in threes keeps the reading at the level where it is useful, which is theme rather than schedule.

Give yourself two sittings. In the first, lay all twelve, write down every card and its orientation, and describe each image in a single plain line without interpreting. That is most of the first half hour and it is not wasted: writing twelve descriptions before interpreting any of them stops the first dramatic card from colouring the whole circle.

In the second sitting, read the groups. Cards one to three, four to six, seven to nine and ten to twelve, each as a cluster with a shared quality. Ask what each cluster is about rather than what each card says. Three pentacles and a wand together read as a stretch of material effort. A cluster with two major arcana cards in it reads as a period where the frame around your life matters more than the daily details.

Then look at the circle as a whole, which is where this reading does something a three-card spread cannot. Count suits. A year heavy in cups and light in pentacles is a different shape from the reverse, and the imbalance is often the single most useful thing in the reading. Count majors too. Many of them suggests a year you will describe in large terms afterwards, few suggests a year of texture and detail, and neither is better.

Note what is absent. No swords anywhere in twelve cards is worth a paragraph in the notebook, since swords cover thought, speech and conflict, and a year-shaped reading with none of them often belongs to someone who has decided not to have certain conversations. Absence is readable in a spread this size in a way it is not in three cards.

Keep the record and reread it twice, at four months and at eight. Do not score it. The value of rereading is noticing which clusters you have been quietly living inside and which you ignored, not checking whether the cards got anything right. A reading of the year ahead is a way of setting your attention, and the notebook is where you find out where your attention actually went.

One thing to leave out entirely: anything about health, legal matters or investments. A twelve-card circle covers a long stretch and it is tempting to read a hard card as a warning about one of those. It is not, and treating it as one turns a reflective exercise into a year of low-level dread.

What this is forLay twelve cards, read them in four clusters, and pay most attention to which suits are over-represented and which are missing.
